About the hotel

Hampton Inn Daly City is a franchised Hampton by Hilton hotel. At the time of the study it was owned by Reneson Hotels, which the case study says owned seven hotels in California from various franchises.

General Manager Thalia Manzo led the whole staff, from the front desk to housekeeping, maintenance, sales, and the restaurant team. Many employees had been with the hotel for years.

The operational problem

Planning the day took hours

Manzo arrived each morning without knowing the guest or staff issues and relied on pages of notes, sticky notes, and conversations with staff to catch up before she could plan.

Issues lived on paper and radio

Problems found on property were written on paper or described over the radio, with nothing documented and no way to be sure details had been understood, particularly across a language barrier.

Guests had to call or walk to the desk

A guest with a problem had to phone or visit the front desk, and had no record of the request until the work was done.

Limited peer support

When a new situation came up, Manzo could only ask whoever happened to be working or colleagues she already knew.

How GuestEQ was used

As described at the time of the study. GuestEQ's features may differ today.

Photos instead of radio descriptions

During her walk of the property, Manzo photographed issues and documented the work to be done, so maintenance or housekeeping knew what to bring. GuestEQ's language translation helped the details land correctly.

A pass-along log

Staff recorded notes for each other through the day in a pass-along log instead of on paper.

Guest requests by text

Guests could text the hotel, and staff received requests as action items. The case study describes an automatic follow-up text telling guests when a task was complete.

Peer support

Through GuestEQ's Hotel Chat, Manzo and her team could post questions and get answers from people in the same roles at other hotels.

Evidence and context

  • Original customer interview and results documented in 2021. Roles, portfolio details, deployment, scores, and operating conditions are described as they were at the time.
  • Source: the GuestEQ case study "Hampton Inn Daly City," based on an interview with Thalia Manzo and documented in 2021. The case study describes the scores as Medallia scores for April 2021.
  • This is an individual franchised hotel. The story does not describe the Hampton or Hilton brands, and neither brand endorses GuestEQ.
  • The time Manzo spent planning is her description of the situation before GuestEQ. It is not a measured time saving, and no time savings are calculated here.
  • The case study also connected review requests to more bookings. It gives no data for that, so the claim is not repeated.
  • Reneson Hotels' current property list is on its portfolio page. Scott Curran serves as COO of Reneson Hotels and is the founder of GuestEQ. Reneson is a GuestEQ customer, not an independent reviewer.
